Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

Come explore the universe that lies within. Create new neuro connections and rewire your brain with E.M.D.R.

E.M.D.R was discovered by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987 and since that time it has revolutionized the field of mental health. I experienced EMDR personally about 20 years ago and I still remember that session today. I left with a sense of awe and wonder of how something so simple could cause such a powerful shift. I am so grateful to be able to offer this technique so that others can experience the shifts and freedoms that it provides!

We have all experienced challenging situations that were difficult or impossible to process, especially if these situations occurred when we were young children, prior to the age when our brain fully formed. Good luck processing information without a fully formed brain! When we are unable to process what is occurring (or we choose to “bury” it) the brain holds this information in the Hippocampus (short term memory) for about 3-6 months. If we are unable to process the information in this time then the memory is stored in our long term memory with a negative belief about ourselves attached to it.

E.M.D.R. gives us the opportunity to rewire the brain. It gives us the opportunity to rewrite the old beliefs!

It is a little like the process that occurs when we experience REM sleep. Think about it… a situation happens and you think, I will sleep on it. If you hit REM sleep you may wake up feeling very differently about it the next day. The brain was able to process while sleeping. By using bilateral stimulation (which occurs in REM sleep when our eyes are moving) we activate the parts of the brain needed in reworking and rewiring.

Here are a few answers to common questions, if you have others, please feel free to reach out and ask!

What is EMDR? EMDR is a highly structured technique that begins with a “problem” or “issue” in your life, a focus. This focus can be physical, emotional, energetic or spiritual. You will be guided through a floatback that will help identify memories associated with the focus, followed by a short series of questions and then led through 90 or so seconds of bilateral stimulation. The bilateral stimulation can occur through the standard eye movements (following dots on the screen or my hand), through auditory stimulation with headphones, or light tapping from one side of the body to the other. There is a brief check in and then the bilateral continues. This rhythm continues until the memory is no longer disturbing and a new core belief (that you create) is installed in your subconscious.

Is EMDR hypnosis? No, although your eyes move back and forth you will be fully conscious the entire time. The techniques influences positive changes in the subconscious even though you will remain conscious.

How long does EMDR therapy take? How many sessions will I need? Great question, and one that is a challenge to answer because it is so unique to the individual. EMDR is the FASTEST method I have ever experienced or witnessed in the mental health field. What could take years to resolve can take weeks or months with EMDR. There are of course factors… how willing are you to experience change?

I am happy to have a consultation call and offer a more clear individual answer.
